THE WINNERS: 97 year old Aud Karlsen is one of the eager contributors from Bjarkøy Nursing home in Norway. Here when she is multitasking.

The Road Worlds for Seniors is of course mostly about the cycling competition, but we also want to engage others around the bike(s) too. That is why we launched the "Artist of the Year" competition this year.

The criterion was to use RWS as the theme - the colours, the people, the cycling etc.

There have been many great entries for the competition and it has been a difficult job to choose a winner. The jury, consisting of the employees of Motitech, had their personal favourites, but in the end we managed to agree on a winner.

Cycling Shorts and Pads

At Bjarkøy, they have produced several different contributions to the competition. Knitted cycling shorts, cycling gloves, felt seat pad and a crocheted seat pad made in bubble mesh.

Led by the crocheted seat pad, their entries amazed the Motitech staff, leading us to claim Bjarkøy as the winners of this year's "Artist of the Year" competition.

- Many of the residents have knitted. 97-year-old Aud Karlsen who knitted and felted a seat pad last year, and did the same this year. She is very good at multitasking and knits while sitting on her bike. She is a real knitter! says unit manager Oddbjørg Arnesen.

The pads have already been given as a gift to the volunteers who have both bought stationary bicycles and contributed to the activities at the nursing home. And the activity has been high this year.

- In fact, 15 out of 16 residents have cycled during the RWS. I wouldn't have thought that before we started. But it turns out that the vast majority of people can ride a bike, even if they are not completely healthy. They still manage, says Arnesen.

More amazing submissions

At Øyane in Stavanger, Norway, a large and beautiful patchwork carpet has been made in the RWS colours. In at the Bruyere Village, Canada, slippers and a walker bag were knitted, and in Dunkirk, England, the frame of a bicycle was knitted (see picture in carousel)

The committed gang from Hvaler also submitted several fantastic contributions this year. Among other things, a hand-forged knife with a damask blade - made from a bicycle chain!

At Langerudhjemmet, Norway, a resident brought in branches from a tree that had fallen down and decorated the whole thing with flowers in RWS colours. Everything was made from paper that was found in the paper waste. Recycling at its best!
